Designer name: Mary Katrantzou

Origin: Athens, Greece

Design background: Mary attended Rhode Island School of Design and then completed both her BA and MA at Central Saint Martins. She has previously worked for Sophia Kokosalaki and freelanced for Bill Blass, amongst other designers. She was awarded NEWGEN sponsorship for six seasons (spring/summer 2009 - autumn/winter 2011).

Design signatures: “A hyperrealist aesthetic, bold graphics and industrial jewellery."

How would you describe the Mary Katrantzou woman? “She has a liberated spirit and a strong sense of style.”

Trademark piece: “A dress inspired by the filtered beauty in design, mapped around the female figure.”

Three spring/summer 2012 inspirations: “Industrial fabrication versus formal beauty in nature.”

What’s next for your brand? “A new website.”

Who are your design heroes? “Coco Chanel, Miuccia Prada and Balenciaga.”

What’s your favourite cultural hotspot in the capital? “The V&A, Sotheby's and Louise Wilson's office!”

In five years’ time I will be… “Still passionate about what it is that I do.”

What encapsulates fashionable London for you? “Somerset House during London Fashion Week.”

How does London influence your designs? “It's a constant source of energy and inspiration to live and work in London. It has a reputation for great fashion, influential museums and strong education. That all becomes part of your formation.”

Mary Katrantzou won the Emerging Talent - Ready-to-Wear award at the British Fashion Awards 2011.
